CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gary Day, 40, was found at a truck stop with 17-year-old Sophia Franklin and appeared in Sarpy County court on April 4 after he was accused of abducting a pregnant Wisconsin teenager—he pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing a false name—and prosecutors planned additional complaints as he was also allegedly wanted in Vermont for exploitation and had a prior conviction in Indiana for endangering a minor. - ➤ On Tuesday, layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington D.C. affected workers in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which raised worries in Nebraska about future changes to utility bill help. Local groups such as Family Housing Advisory Services and OPPD say LIHEAP funds remain available this year (as allocated) and they are now promoting financial education to help residents prepare if cuts come.
