ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Two people were seriously injured in a crash on I-80 near the 42nd Street exit just after 1 a.m.—the cause is under investigation. KETV
- ➤ Neighbors in Ralston say cars crash into yards and hit guard rails two or three times a year—residents worry that speeding drivers will soon cause a major accident and want the city to act. 3 News Now
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gary Day, 40, was found at a truck stop with 17-year-old Sophia Franklin and appeared in Sarpy County court on April 4 after he was accused of abducting a pregnant Wisconsin teenager—he pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing a false name—and prosecutors planned additional complaints as he was also allegedly wanted in Vermont for exploitation and had a prior conviction in Indiana for endangering a minor. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington D.C. affected workers in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which raised worries in Nebraska about future changes to utility bill help. Local groups such as Family Housing Advisory Services and OPPD say LIHEAP funds remain available this year (as allocated) and they are now promoting financial education to help residents prepare if cuts come. - ➤ State Treasurer Tom Briese said he will work to lower property taxes by boosting state funding for K-12 education and boosting government efficiency. He supports plans like LB 170 that would use funds from removed soft drink and candy tax breaks for relief and noted that an independent review found nearly $531 million in potential savings (and one in five residents may have unclaimed property waiting to be recovered).
