COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bellevue Food Pantry launched its 'Bringing Everyone to the Table' campaign to expand services by converting a former public library into a new 21,500-square-foot pantry and community services hub—this project costs $7.2M with $3.5M secured so far. Construction will begin early in 2026 and doors will open by the end of next year.  Bellevue Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Film Streams announced Academy Award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee will offer a deep dive into his career at the Feature IX fundraiser on November 16 at the Holland Performing Arts Center – the event includes a pre-party at 5:30 p.m., his presentation at 7 p.m., and a post-party at 8:30 p.m.  KETV
  • The Bellevue University Library will host a free screening of the documentary Banned Together: The Fight Against Censorship on Wednesday, Oct. 8 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Room 480 at the Freeman/Lozier Library at 1028 Bruin Blvd; attendees will watch the film — which follows three students and their supporters challenging the removal of 97 books from school libraries — and free parking is available in lots A and B.  Bellevue Times
  • At the Holland Performing Arts Center, a portrait shows Dick and Mary Holland from their first performance in 2005 and daughter Andy recalls how they helped shape Omaha by always giving back. Their legacy, built on a foundation started in 1995, sets a strong example for local support—marking 20 years of dedication to the arts.  KETV
  • Wildlife Encounters of Nebraska brought live animals to the studio today—KETV's Waverle Monroe met Sydney, a baby kangaroo, and Bella, a cockatoo, during an outreach program to teach about wildlife and conservation. The organization, which has served the community for over 30 years, will host more events to help locals learn about and protect wild animals.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Goodwill partnered with the Adult Education Center to launch Nebraska’s first high school diploma program for adults over 21. The program offers online and in-person classes at Goodwill headquarters—72nd Street—with classes starting Oct 6 and a December graduation while graduates gain wraparound services and mentoring from graduate Tyra Parnell.  KETV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts say that bright fall colors depend on timely rains—more rain brings out vivid yellows and oranges while drought can dull these hues. Since 2021, lower moisture has affected the colors and better rains are expected later this week.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska Healthy Families and Workplaces Act goes into effect today, requiring all employees to have paid sick leave except for minors under 16, seasonal agriculture workers, and small businesses with 10 or fewer employees—employees will start earning leave after 80 consecutive work hours with 40 or 56 hours set annually based on company size.  KETV
