  • Nebraska Humane Society said it wants to help Texas animal shelters hit by floods but is at capacity with 104 dogs + 60 cats; on Tuesday it lowered adoption fees to free up kennels so it can join a Texas shelter's plan to fly about 60 animals to another location if space opens.  KETV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 28-year-old from Plattsmouth faced four felony charges (attempted second-degree murder, terroristic threats, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm near a vehicle) after a road rage incident on Highway 75 near Fairview Road in Bellevue and was arraigned with a $5 million bond.  WOWT

  • Retailers are offering school supply deals as Walmart gives up to 50% off until July 13, Amazon provides up to 40% off through Friday, and Target discounts nearly all supplies until Saturday— the Salvation Army is collecting donations for its 27th annual backpack program.  KETV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new report from UNL’s National Drought Mitigation Center (in partnership with the U.N.) shows that worsening drought has led to food and water shortages around the world while leaving Nebraska, which relies on farming, vulnerable. The report calls for better planning (such as stronger irrigation systems) to reduce the risk of future drought damage.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Pillen met with cabinet members in Washington, D.C. this week to discuss measures after a report showed nearly 2% of Nebraska farmland is owned by foreign entities—he stressed that protecting these lands is key to national security.  WOWT
  • Nebraska Task Force One and teams from Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Virginia are working in central Texas after the July 4 storms to search for survivors using boats, helicopters and trained dogs — poor communication has limited updates on reports of over 160 missing people and 100 bodies recovered.  WOWT
