EDUCATION NEWS

  • Metro Community College broke ground on a 144-acre campus in Sarpy County Thursday morning, marking its first permanent campus since 1980. The new mixed-use development will eventually offer academic, dining, and retail space & housing options to serve local students as the project remains in the pre-development phase.  3 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Andrew Ozaki, who covered Lincoln for 43 years, will retire on Monday after 40 years at KETV — Congressman Mike Flood honored his record of tenacity and kindness on the U.S. House floor Thursday.  KETV
  • Eighteen Nebraska state senators sent a letter to U.S. Sens. Pete Ricketts and Deb Fischer urging them to protect SNAP funding—estimates say the proposed changes could add $30 million in extra costs yearly and affect over 153,000 benefit recipients including children, veterans, and seniors.  KETV
  • A federal court dismissed a lawsuit that aimed to block Nebraska’s legalization of medical cannabis because the judge ruled that John Kuehn did not have standing to sue. The Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission adopted emergency rules on Thursday.  WOWT
  • A district court in Nebraska threw out a lawsuit filed by John Kuehn on Thursday that attempted to block two measures legalizing medical marijuana. The Lancaster County judge ruled Kuehn lacked standing—while the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission also adopted emergency regulations the same day.  WOWT
  • First Alert 6 reported that detainees from the ICE raid at Glenn Valley Foods on June 10 remain in limbo as many are still held in North Platte pending judicial hearings that begin on June 30 and continue into early July—CIRA is assisting the detainees with legal representation for immigration cases that can take up to three years to resolve.  WOWT
