ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local business owner Owen Kobes of Owen’s Mowing warned that rising gas prices will soon boost fuel costs for equipment—he said surcharges might be needed if operating expenses double. An economist explained that global conflicts are expected to keep prices high—prompting Bellevue residents to reassess their transportation budgets.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cox Communications announced today it will award $43,000 to 20 Nebraska and Iowa educators through its employee-funded Cox Charities Education Grant program, with six Bellevue schools receiving funds to upgrade classroom technology and support hands-on learning (after reviewing over 70 applications).  Bellevue Times
  • The U.S. Department of War is considering the University of Nebraska as one of 15 potential partners to train future military leaders starting in the 2026-27 academic year + it ended 93 fellowships at 22 elite schools to refocus officer training.  WOWT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In December, reports showed visible mold and moisture damage across the museum, which led to its temporary closure. Bellevue Mayor Rusty Hike said the city will independently inspect the building and decide on next steps (damage estimated at over $880,000) to ensure public safety.  3 News Now

  • The body of Bellevue soldier Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens, who was killed in Kuwait last weekend, is set to return to Dover Air Force Base today. Iowa Congressman Zach Nunn and Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley will attend the solemn transfer.  WOWT
