- ➤ Youth Emergency Services helped 789 kids in fiscal 2025 and is set to serve 1,000 in 2026 as cold weather drives more youth, especially from Douglas County (and nearby areas), to seek shelter, warm clothes, and meals at its center on 26th and Harney. KETV
- ➤ Omaha-area homelessness outreach groups conducted Tuesday night’s point-in-time count of sheltered and unsheltered residents in Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties as required by HUD to track the impact of local strategies—with counts rising to nearly 225 unsheltered in 2024 and dropping to just under 200 in 2025. - ➤ At a Tuesday Capitol hearing, lawmakers discussed LB 1050 to hold back readers, LB 1024 to require teaching on communism, and LB 1053 to reinstate suspensions for kindergarten to 2nd grade students. Supporters and opponents testified — further debate is scheduled. WOWT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen reversed planned cuts to home care waivers for older adults and disabled individuals, keeping caregiver paid hours at 112 per week after Bellevue families raised concerns. The state will accept public comment from Feb. 2 to March 4. WOWT
- ➤ Nebraska DHHS on Tuesday eliminated a proposal to cap caregiver hours for families caring for medically needy loved ones after Gov. Pillen received strong public feedback. A second review period will run from Feb. 2 through March 4 to gather further input. WOWT
